Facing mounting pressure from students and faculty, Bishop’s University principal Robert Poupart stepped down yesterday, a year and a half before the end of his term.
Bishop’s has been struggling with falling enrolment and a deficit that could reach $10 million this year. The reasons for Poupart’s departure were not given, but he had carried out an administrative shuffle Monday, placing Jonathan Rittenhouse, vice-principal (academic), on administrative leave as of Jan. 1. The university, however, announced that Rittenhouse will immediately replace Poupart as interim principal.
Scott Griffin, chancellor of the university, said in a phone interview from Toronto that Poupart had lost the confidence of both the board of governors and the university at large.
